AUBURN HILLS, Mich., May 9 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- DaimlerChrysler recognized The Diez Group, Cummins Engine and several Chrysler Group employees and employee groups for their commitment and exceptional performance in minority supplier development in 2005. The special awards were given last week during the Michigan Minority Business Development Council's (MMBDC) Procurement Conference at Cobo Conference Center in Detroit.
"In a hype-competitive auto market, companies need products, marketing and people who can relate to the changing face of the marketplace," said Peter Rosenfeld, Chrysler Group Executive Vice President - Procurement & Supply and Chairman of the Michigan Minority Business Development Council on behalf of DaimlerChrysler for 2006 and 2007. "Investing in minority suppliers who have a deep understanding of their unique customers' unique culture and heritage is not only the right thing to do, it also is good for the bottom line."

The Diez Group, a steel processing and metal stamping company, received the "Minority Business Enterprise of the Year" award for its world-class performance in reliability, tracking, cost, technology and quality products and services. Cummins Engine, a supplier of diesel engines, was awarded the "Supplier of the Year" award for increasing its minority supplier business to 12 percent, four percent higher than DaimlerChrysler requests of its Tier 1 suppliers.

Several DaimlerChrysler organizations and individuals also were recognized for their efforts to increase minority supplier development opportunities that enhance DaimlerChrysler's supplier participation in minority sourcing. All of these groups exceeded their goal by more than 100 percent. These include: Mopar Procurement, which won first place; Global Marketing and Construction Services, which won second place; and Interior Trim, which took third place. Additionally, Mark Resovsky, Powertrain Components Buyer, was recognized for having the greatest increase with Tier 1 minority purchases and Rolanda Heard, Computer Components and Peripherals Buyer, received special honors for a 57 percent improvement in minority sourcing.

"It is an honor to recognize these organizations and individuals who have demonstrated their understanding that diversity is vital to the sustainability of this economy and this community," said Jethro Joseph, Senior Manager - Diversity Supplier Development for Chrysler Group. "As one of the industry leaders in minority supplier development, DaimlerChrysler believes it is our responsibility to recognize these stellar achievements while striving to set the example for other businesses.

In 2005, the Company was among the industry leaders in diversity procurement. Chrysler Group spent $3.8 billion with minority suppliers, which represents 13 percent of its total procurement spending, and an increase of $400 million from 2004.

In addition to the dozen of national and regional organizations that have recognized the Chrysler Group, in April 2006, the Company received three high- profile diversity awards for its significant contributions in the minority business community: "Corporate Advocate of the Year" from the Native American Business Alliance, "Corporation of the Year" from the Asian-Pacific American Chamber of Commerce and one of the "Top 50 Company for Diversity" by DiversityInc Magazine.

Since 1983, Chrysler Group has purchased more than $30 billion from minority-owned companies and has developed a number of programs to build its minority supplier base. Those include a new supplier diversity Web site (http://supplierdiversity.daimlerchrysler.com/ ), Chrysler Group's Matchmaker program and the Minority Enterprise Initiative (MEI).
